The LATINO SCHOLARSHIP FUND, was founded in 1995 by a small group of individuals concerned with the poor academic achievement of Latino students in the greater Danbury area (consisting of Bethel, Brookfield, New Fairfield, New Milford, Newtown, Redding and Ridgefield). Our concerns revolved around the low rate of Latino students graduating from high school and the subsequently lower rate entering college. We became a designated non-profit (501c3) organization, primarily made up of children of immigrants. We have been a group with dreams; dreams our parents gave us, dreams about successful futures.

Our mission developed into addressing concerns about the lack of success in higher education on the part of Latino students. We believe that by identifying students who have demonstrated potential, as well as searching out those whose potential has not been noticed, offering them role models, and financial aid to pursue higher education; a difference can be made.

Our goal has been to work with students, parents and the school system to alter what is a serious problem in the Danbury area. We have accomplished our goal, but always raising the bar as we continue to raise money in order to provide scholarships to qualified students in the future.

As of 2007, the LATINO SCHOLARSHIP FUND has raised through vigorous fund raising efforts, over $420,000 and has awarded scholarships to 258 Latino students from the greater Danbury area. In 2008, for the third straight year, we will award in excess of $50,000 in scholarships. Some of the scholars we have been able to assist have attended and graduated from schools such as: Yale, George Washington University, UCONN, Boston College, Syracuse University, Bryn Mawr College, MIT, Penn State, Johnson and Wales, Purdue University, New York University, Fordham University, St. Joseph’s College, Central Connecticut State University, Southern Connecticut State University and Western Connecticut State University.

We are proud of our students and our accomplishments, and will continue our mission to offer educational opportunity to the Latino students of our region. We welcome support on all levels, and are available to provide information about our organization as well as guidance in the scholarship process.
