Our History

The LATINO SCHOLARSHIP FUND, was founded in 1995 by a small group of individuals concerned with the poor academic achievement of Latino students in the greater Danbury area (consisting of Bethel, Brookfield, New Fairfield, New Milford, Newtown, Redding and Ridgefield). Our concerns revolved around the low rate of Latino students graduating from high school and the subsequently lower rate entering college. We became a designated non-profit (501c3) organization, primarily made up of children of immigrants. We have been a group with dreams; dreams our parents gave us, dreams about successful futures.

Our mission developed into addressing concerns about the lack of success in higher education on the part of Latino students. We believe that by identifying students who have demonstrated potential, as well as searching out those whose potential has not been noticed, offering them role models, and financial aid to pursue higher education; a difference can be made.

Our goal has been to work with students, parents and the school system to alter what is a serious problem in the Danbury area. We have accomplished our goal, but always raising the bar as we continue to raise money in order to provide scholarships to qualified students.

Over the past 16 years, the Latino Scholarship Fund has provided financial assistance to nearly 400 Latino students from the Greater Danbury area, going on to post high school education.  Many of our recipients have gone to schools such as:  Yale, George Washington University, UCONN, Boston College, MIT, Syracuse, Bryn Mawr College, Penn State, Johnson & Wales, Florida State, Purdue, NYU, Fordham University, St. Josephs College, and many other schools across the country.  Many stay local, attending Central Connecticut, Southern Connecticut, Western Connecticut, and Naugatuck Valley, and Norwalk Community Colleges.  The Latino Scholarship Fund has begun to accumulate an impressive group of graduates who have gone on and are going on to successful careers.

We are proud of our students and their accomplishments, and will continue our mission to provide for tomorrow’s leaders.  We welcome support on all levels, and are available to provide information about our organization as well as guidance in the scholarship process.
